Trader Joe’s is committed to carrying food produced in environmentally sustainable ways. They recently committed to carrying only cage-free raised eggs and environmentally friendly seafood. They claim that all products with the Trader Joe’s label contain:
- no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives;
- no genetically modified ingredients;
- no MSG; and
- no added trans fats.
Originally founded in Los Angeles by Joe Coulombe as a chain of convenience stores, Trader Joe’s opened in 1967 with a new focus and aesthetic. The Trader Joe’s of today sets itself apart from other grocery stores by offering narrower, more specialized stock, including organic, gourmet, imported, vegetarian, and high quality snack and frozen foods, as well as nonfood items such as flowers and vitamins. Its affordable prices are the result of building smaller and plainer stores, using plain packaging, and carrying a smaller variety of products with shorter shelf-life because of their high turnaround. In 2010 Fortune Magazine reported that the company had double the sales of Whole Foods Market.
