Sarasota’s Benderson Park is an amazing rowing venue!

Better yet, I got really excited when I discovered Sarasota’s ambitious plans to create a world-class rowing destination…right HERE in Sarasota!

Over 15,000 high school rowing champs and their parents and relatives from over 40 schools throughout Florida joined rowing enthusiasts at the amazing Florida Scholastic Championship Rowing Regatta.

This is Sarasota!

This is Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park.

A world-class rowing destination?

Unbelievable!

Okay, I admit, I had no clue Benderson Park even existed. By this admission, I’m embarrassed since my family and I have lived in Sarasota area for 21 years. I was a high school teacher/coach for many years…and didn’t know about Sarasota rowing and Benderson Park popularity.

I also had no clue Benderson Park was in its 2nd year hosting over 15,000 high school athletes competing in the Florida Scholastic Championship Rowing Regatta.

From my neighbor and friend, a Sarasota County Manager, I discovered last year’s (2009) Benderson Park’s inaugural high school state rowing championships raked in over 1.76 MILLION dollars.

Holy mackerel. This is huge, folks.

Benderson Park creates local treasure chest!

Surrounding hotels, restaurants & stores sold out.

Even better, I discovered Sarasota’s ambitious (and serious local stimulus) includes competing for the NCAA’s 2012 championship, the World Cup Championship three years later, and certification by the International Federation of Rowing Associations, the governing body for the sport worldwide.

Apparently, future improvements include $40 million worth of amenities such as a boathouse, docks, improvements to Cattlemen Road and other upgrades. My neighbor mentioned a Sarasota Herald-Tribune news article suggesting Benderson Park could become to rowing what London’s Wembley Stadium is to soccer.

Un-believ-able!

To think, just a few days earlier I didn’t even know Benderson Park existed or that Sarasota was hosting over 15,000 high school athletes from more than 36 Florida high schools. Amazing!

Sarasota lifestyle – just when you think you’ve experienced (more than once) all Sarasota’s treasured opportunities, you discover one more: Benderson Park. My family and I are so happy our introduction to Benderson Park took place on the weekend of the Florida Scholastic Championship Rowing Regatta. For 16 years, I taught and coached high school kids. Whether recreational rowing, high school state championship rowing or World Cup Rowing Championships, Sarasota clearly is positioning Benderson Park for more amazing opportunities.
